The Route 4033, Section 008 bridge replacement project is located along Route 4033 (Milton Grove Road) over Back Run in Rapho Township, Lancaster County. The purpose of this project is to address deficiencies on the bridge and provide continued access on Milton Grove Road over Back Run.

The existing structure was built in 1934 and rehabilitated in 1950 and is a single-span steel I-beam bridge supported on masonry abutments. The existing bridge length is approximately 31 feet. The existing structure is classified as structurally deficient and nearing the end of life.

The proposed replacement structure will be a single span composite prestressed concrete spread box beam bridge with a 42-foot length, measured center-center of bearings.

This section of Milton Grove Road has an average daily traffic volume of 2181 vehicles per day (vpd).

The bridge will be closed for approximately 6 months to all traffic during construction. The proposed 5.7-mile detour will utilize PA Route 772, PA Route 230, Route 4017 (Snyder Road) and Route 4010/T-356 (Mount Pleasant Road). Please refer to the project’s Detour Plan graphic. Access to all driveways within the project limits will be maintained during construction. Overhead utilities are present at the site and utility relocations are currently not anticipated.

The project is currently in design, and construction work is anticipated to begin in Spring 2027 and last approximately 2 months.

The purpose of the plans display is to introduce the project and solicit public input, questions, or concerns regarding the project.

Environmental Considerations

The bridge is located in a rural residential area of Rapho Township, with land use largely consisting of agricultural parcels. Pedestrian or bicycle facilities do not exist through this section of Milton Grove Road.

In-stream work will include temporary cofferdams to allow construction of the new abutments.

There are no wetlands in the project area.

Cultural Resource investigations are currently being completed as part of the preliminary engineering studies.

Utilities

Overhead electric and data/communication lines and poles are present at the site. Utility relocations are currently not anticipated to accommodate construction operations.

Maintenance and Protection of Traffic

The bridge will be closed for approximately 6 months to all traffic during construction. The proposed 5.7-mile detour will utilize PA Route 772, PA Route 230 SR 4017 (Snyder Road) and Route 4010/T-356 (Mount Pleasant Road). Please refer to the project’s Detour Plan graphic.
