In District 1, 41 bridges were repaired, replaced, or preserved by PennDOT or industry forces through December 2024. 525.53 miles of roadway were improved by department or partner crews through December 2024. From January through December 2024, 51 construction contracts for highway, bridge, and other improvement projects was completed in the district through PennDOT's private-sector partners.

Bayfront Parkway Improvement Project
Cost: $112 million

This is a multi-year project to reconstruct a 2.5-mile section of Route 6 in the City of Meadville and West Mead Township in Crawford County. The purpose of the project is to maintain traffic efficiency and community transportation needs while improving the geometry of the roadway. The project also includes updates to three intersections and the creation of a multi-use trail. Work started in August 2024 and is expected to be completed in fall 2025. More About the Route 6 Reconstruction Project (Updated)The bridge that carries Route 318 over Interstate 376 sustained substantial damage after being struck by the boom of a truck on December 7, 2023. The bridge was immediately closed and quickly there after work started to demolish the damaged section. Over the next nine months, a new bridge was designed, a contract was awarded, and the construction was complete. On September 20, 2024, the new bridge, with higher vertical clearance was open to all traffic. For additional information on the emergency project is available on the project webpage.

More About the Route 318 Emergency Bridge ReplacementThe purpose of the project is to improve the pedestrian, bicycle and vehicle connections between the Erie business district and adjacent neighborhoods to the waterfront, reduce crashes and future congestion, and increase traffic efficiency at Sassafras State and Holland streets. Preliminary work on the project started in October 2023 and is expected to be completed in 2027.
