Project Overview

County: Franklin
Municipality: Peters Township
State Route: SR 0075
Local Name: Fort Loudon Road
Project Type: Bridge Rehabilitation
Proposed Construction Start: 2027
Last Updated: 12/26/2024

The SR 0075 Section 013 bridge restoration project is located along Route 75 (Fort Loudon Road) over Buck Run in Peters Township, Franklin County, approximately 2 miles north of Mercersburg. The purpose of this project is to rehabilitate the bridge and provide continued safe and efficient crossing of Route 75 over Buck Run.

The project involves the replacement of the beams and deck while keeping the existing abutments. Substructure repairs, minor approach roadway reconstruction, drainage pipe replacement, along with guide rail, scour repair, pavement marking and signing updates will also be completed as part of the project. A temporary stream diversion will be constructed to complete the necessary substructure repairs. The proposed roadway curb to curb width will remain similar to the existing conditions with 11-foot lanes and 4-foot shoulders.

This section of Fort Loudon Road has an average daily traffic volume of 2,450 vehicles per day.

Additional Project Information

Environmental

The project is located in a rural setting with terrain varying from level to rolling. The western quadrants consist primarily of pastureland with a residence located north-west of the structure. There are also residences in the southeast and northeast quadrants. A potentially historic property is beyond the project limits west of the bridge. Private driveways are located at three of the four quadrants and access will be maintained during construction. There are no bicycle or pedestrian facilities for this route. Other environmental efforts for the project include investigating historical, archeological and aquatic resources as well as threatened and endangered species.

Utilities

There are overhead utilities in the vicinity of the project that will be relocated for beam construction.

Right-of-Way

Temporary right-of-way acquisitions are anticipated to allow the construction of the project.

Maintenance and Protection of Traffic

The bridge will be closed for approximately 8 months to all traffic during construction. Due to an existing bridge weight restriction, separate car and truck detours will be implemented. The car detour will be approximately 5 mile using Orchard Road, Lemar Road, and Route 416, while the truck detour will be approximately 16 miles using Route 75, US 30, and Route 416. Please refer to the project’s Detour Plan graphic. Access to all driveways within the project limits will be maintained during construction.

Schedule and Cost

Overall construction is anticipated to last approximately 8 months during the spring, summer and fall of 2027 at an estimated cost of $1.4 million.
